Welcome to the Premier American Jiu-Jitsu School: South Bay Jiu Jitsu

Where Excellence in Martial Arts Meets Tradition. And history making legends teach timeless effective techniques to students both young and old, male and female, as well as professional and amateur competitors. Headed by Bob Bass, the first American in history to get a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under the Machado Brothers Dynasty. Bob was the 1995 world jiu-jitsu champion as well as the most dynamic member of the dirty dozen. Or the first 12 non Brazilian to get black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Bob started out wrestling at Mira Costa high school in Manhattan Beach California. Bob’s top student spanning over the past 25 years is now Coach Sean, who ended up being signed to the UFC, fighting for the world renowned Bellator fighting championships on NBC and their inaugural middleweight championship tournament, as well as winning the king of the cage world championship. Sean won 17 world championships in mixed martial arts and professional boxing combined. Also featured at South Bay jiu-jitsu are other phenomenal in-house black belts that coach the students as well. Since we are a school that support surfing and the beach life we will keep it casual and just name our black belt by their first names here like Kos, Gene, Derek, Frank, Tony, and more. But in the coaching section, we will get very in-depth with their accomplishments and who they are as people. The location being so close to the Pacific Ocean makes it a true experience to participate at South Bay jiu-jitsu.

With a wrestling background and dominating the high school scene in Southern California in the late 70s and early 80s Bob is simply described as a living legend of grappling. Come enjoy his classes on Mondays and Tuesdays. Or book a private lesson with this encyclopedia of jiu-jitsu. If you have an opportunity to work with this martial art, genius, you better jump at the chance. Bob has forgotten more about jiu-jitsu than anyone else will ever know. He has multiple knockouts over former UFC and Bellator contenders. He amassed a professional MMA record of 35-5 with an undefeated amateur record. A professional boxing record of 8-1 with all knockouts and 63 amateur bouts. As well as competing professionally in grappling, Muay Thai, as well as other combat sports.
